20 Aug 2017 Boardmasters Trophies
In May this year the chaps who run the Boardmasters surf comp got in touch as they were looking for local makers to design and build them this years trophies. The brief went out to tender and very excited for this opportunity we got cracking with the design and submitted our solution.
As with all the Boardmasters to date, using local sustainable materials and craft was imperative. We sourced our timber for the project from a local supplier of ours based in Dartmoor, Devon, which isn’t far from the workshop. The timber of choice was Elm and Ash, both grown and harvested here in the South West, from plantations established over 100 years ago. The stringers were made from some of the offcuts we generate from our surfboard building business.
The form and aesthetic of the design was taken straight from the ocean and bended with the iconic Boardmasters B Icon. In house CAD/CAM was used to make the bulk of the shape then carefully sanded by hand and finished with natural linseed oil bringing out the rich colour and grain of the wood.
A huge thanks to the Boardmasters team for the opportunity to be this years makers and huge congratulations to all of the winners, Ride on!
“Thank you to the folk at Lignum for the trophies – they looked amazing. It is great to have such passion and authenticity going into a key part of our surf competition, and they were really appreciated by the winners. Using ecologically-friendly natural products is a key part of our brand ethos, and to have locally-sourced wood crafted by pro shapers into the Boardmasters symbol has given us an iconic trophy that represents the key values of the brand.”
